What happens is many times home connections will set these up for you automatically giving your computer the wrong DNS server

In Short DNS Servers translate domain names to IP addresses. When DNS is not working 100% it can really affect your experience with the internet

Our Recommendations would be to us the Google DNS you can put the following details in for the primary DNS
8.8.8.8 and for the secondary DNS Server you can use 8.8.4.4

Header Text

Sub Heading

Dear all,

A useful tip for those of you who didn’t know it already.

On Friday I migrated a user to a new PC and also to Microsoft Office 2010. As you know, one of the things we migrate is the NK2 (Outlook Autocomplete) file from their old profile and overwrite the one on their new PC in %appdata%\Microsoft\Outlook.

With Microsoft Office 2010 this is not as straightforward and there’s a few more steps you need to do. See the link below for more details:

When you start Microsoft Outlook 2010 for the first time, your nickname cache (stored in the profilename.nk2 file) is imported into a hidden message in your default message store.

Note profilename is the name of your Outlook profile.

For example, if you are using a Microsoft Exchange account, the nickname cache is imported into a hidden message in the Exchange mailbox.

Note Earlier versions of Outlook store the nickname cache .nk2 file in the following folder.

Windows XP
Drive:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Windows Vista and later versions
Drive:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

After the nickname cache is imported, the profilename.nk2 file is renamed to profilename.nk2.old. On the next start of Outlook, your nickname cache is not imported. Outlook 2010 does not use the .nk2 file for maintaining your nickname cache. All updates to your nickname cache in Outlook 2010 are made to the hidden message in your default message store.

Note If you have multiple Outlook profiles, the nickname cache from each profile is merged into your new Outlook 2010 nickname cache on the first start of Outlook 2010 by using that profile. Therefore, you may find more than one .nk2 file renamed to .nk2.old.

However, there may be situations where you have to import a nickname cache file after this first-run nickname cache import process has finished. For example, a colleague wants to share their nickname cache with you and you want to update your existing nickname cache with your colleague’s data.

This article discusses how to import .nk2 files into Outlook 201

Let me fix it myself

To import .nk2 files into Outlook 2010, follow these steps:

Make sure that the .nk2 file is in the following folder:

%appdata%\Microsoft\OutlookNote The .nk2 file must have the same name as your current Outlook 2010 profile. By default, the profile name is “Outlook.” To check the profile name, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Mail.

In the Mail Setup dialog box, click Show Profiles.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type outlook.exe /importnk2, and then click OK. This should import the .nk2 file into the Outlook 2010 profile.

Note After you import the .nk2 file, the contents of the file are merged into the existing nickname cache that is currently stored in your mailbox.

Note The .nk2 file is renamed with a .old file name extension on the first start of Outlook 2010. Therefore, if you try to re-import the .nk2 file, remove the .old file name extension.

Login to the PC with Admin rights,

1. If windows tries to shut down itself, it gives you a minute, so enter DOS as quickly as possible by clicking strat run, cmd and ok and type the command

shutdown – a

in order to abort the windows automatic windows shutdown

2. Downloaded http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/dat.asp

the latest DAT 5959xdat to a usb or burn to a CD – this will resolve the lack network issue

3. Run DAT on the affected computer and when finished reboot to resolve the false positive issue

Recommended Recovery SuperDAT Procedure
1. From a machine that has Internet access, locate and download the Recovery SuperDAT at http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/tools/SDAT5958_EM.exe and save it to portable media.
2. Take the portable media to each affected machine and run the tool. If you are not able to run the tool on the affected machine, boot in safe mode
3. Execute the Recovery SuperDAT tool
4. Reboot in normal mode
5. Use the product update to update to 5959

If this does not work chances are the svchost.exe file is dead then the solution is more complex and may need to be done with our assistance:

1) Get an undamaged copy of svchost.exe.

2) Create a CD with the following on it: McAfee AntiVirus 8.7i (this is the install files) and the undamaged copy of svchost.exe.

3) Boot Windows into Safe Mode.

4) Rename the McAfee folder (C:\Program Files\McAfee) to McAfeeXZ

5) Reboot to Normal Mode.

6) Load the CD you created and open a command prompt (you may need to Ctrl-Alt-Del to load Task Manager, do a File>New Task (Run..) and type cmd).

7) (Assuming your CD drive is D:\) type the following command: copy d:\svchost.exe c:\windows\system32\.

Hit enter and when it asks if you want to overwrite type Y and hit enter again.

9) Reboot.

10) Test the Internet, if it is working, you are in good shape.

11) Go to Add\Remove Programs and remove the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise & McAfee Agent (in that order).

12) Delete the old McAfee folder (C:\Program Files\McAfeeXZ)

13) Reinstall McAfee from your CD and perform the update during the post-installation to get the latest DAT file.

14) Make sure you create any schedules scans you had or configuration changes you made before, as it will be a fresh install of McAfee.

15) Reboot and test it out, everything should be working as it was before, including the OS.
